A new review published in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics aimed to determine the effects of pelvic floor interventions during pregnancy on childbirth-related and pelvic floor parameters. The review included 22 randomized controlled trials conducted on healthy pregnant women given pelvic floor muscle training, published during 1990-2016. Baseline and outcome data were compared for three interventions - perineal dilator, pelvic floor muscle training, and perineal massage. The results showed that the largest study investigating pelvic floor muscle training reported a significant reduction in the duration of second stage of labor, and this intervention also reduced the incidence of urinary incontinence - according to the findings in 10 trials. Additionally, two of six trials investigating perineal massage reported that a lower rate of perineal pain was associated with this intervention. From the findings, it was inferred that pelvic floor muscle training and perineal massage improved childbirth-related parameters and pelvic floor symptoms.
